AMELIA DAMER
An Exploration into the Emotional Durability of Clothing
Craftsmanship & Workwear
Photos taken in my client's studio
A series of bespoke garments designed to last through generations. Using theories surrounding the psychology of clothing and emotional durability to inform the technical language and fabric selection within the collection. Each piece is very detail-oriented. The importance of mending in forming an emotional attachment has been investigated through physical experimentation. References to traditional workwear, specifically denim, are explored alongside my client's wardrobe to create silhouettes tailored to her taste. To expand on this research, I also observed the environment she lives and works In, considering what factors influenced a more discursive relationship between her and the particular pieces she cherishes. I believe functionality is a crucial factor when forming user-object relationships. The way we engage with our wardrobes creates memories that influence the attachments we have to them, these interactions cannot be had without a well-functioning product. Fabric and tactility are very important to this collection as touch can create strong emotive responses. The fabrics used within this collection have been carefully considered and each has a texture or process behind them which allows my client to form an attachment to them.
